The Primary Years Program (PYP)

In 2005 Hong Lok International School (HLYIS) began investigating the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (IBPYP) as a curriculum model. In 2006 the school was awarded candidacy status with PYP and since that time, the school community has been working to implement and adopt the elements and requirements of the PYP. The school has received pre-authorisation status and is now preparing for full authorisation in March 2010

  • The International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) is one of three programmes  offered by the International Baccalaureate.
  • It is an international curriculum model that provides guidelines for what students should learn, teaching methods and assessment strategies
  • It is designed for students aged 3-12 years and is a program that promotes the development of the whole child - social, physical, emotional and cultural needs as well as academic development.
  • It combines best practice and research in teaching and learning from a very large range of national systems throughout the world

As part of our PYP learning and teaching, we recognise that:

  • Students have prior knowledge and experiences that form part of who they are
  • Students have beliefs about the world based on these experiences
  • Learning takes place when it is connected and relevant to the student
  • Learning should be meaningful, fun, hands-on and investigative
  • Learning and meaning can be constructed structured inquiries
  • Social interactions are a big part of successful learning and teaching

We ensure that our learning is engaging, relevant, challenging and significant. We promote global perspectives, and build awareness and foster sensitivity to the perspectives, experiences and backgrounds of others.

At HLYIS we have over 50 different nationalities at our school and recognise and celebrate many different cultures. In doing so, we strive to develop students who have an understanding of their responsibility to the world. By focusing on the PYP Learner Profile we can develop international-minded students who are aware of themselves and the part they in their community and world.
